Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some laser levels use green light while others use red?

It’s not just for aesthetics, as you might think. Red lasers are less powerful (and not as easy to see) but consume less battery power. Green lasers are easier to see from a distance, making them better for outside projects in bright sunlight. Green lasers are also more expensive as well as potentially damaging if you accidentally shine one in your eye. Some levels provide both types of light, which is a good feature if you have both inside and outside work.

How come my laser level has a bubble vial built in as well?

Some laser levels are self-leveling, meaning you can place it on the floor or on a tripod mount and an internal mechanism will compensate if the device is on an uneven surface. If your laser level doesn’t have this feature, it’s good to have the traditional bubble vial level built in, so you can manually adjust the laser level to give you an accurate line. Just keep the air bubble between the two lines in the center of the liquid vial, and you’re good to go.

Do you have to calibrate a laser level?

Yes. Most models come calibrated from the manufacturer, but they can be jostled during delivery and need to be recalibrated right out of the box. If yours is functioning precisely from day one, you should still consider recalibrating once every year. Your owners manual should explain the process, or check the manufacturers website for instructions.
